There <b><i>might</i></b> also be some guilt (and therefore blog posting procrastination) around not making a lot of progress on my <a href="http://chezzetcookmodernquilts.blogspot.ca/p/the-library-project.html" target="_blank">Library Project</a> selections. Heh.<br />
<br />
I seriously think I might have a case of crafter's ADD, because ... oooh, shiny new thing/book/cool idea on instagram/blog post/guild challenge.<br />
<br />
The VMQG has started doing <a href="http://vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca/blog/book-reviews/" target="_blank">book reviews</a>, which I'm organizing. We've gotten some really <i>fabulous</i> books from both Martingale and Stash, and we have about a dozen guild members on the review team.<br />
<br />
I'm reviewing this really cute book called <a href="http://www.shopmartingale.com/kitchen-stitches.html" target="_blank">Kitchen Stitches</a>, which is a curated collection of patterns for things like placemats, table runners, tea cozies, pot holders, and more. My review will be posted to the VMQG blog in the next few weeks, but first I want to finish off a project set from the book. I completely fell in love with the "Circle Blooms" tea cozy and placemat set designed by Amy Struckmeyer. She blogs at <a href="http://www.formworkdesign.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">form*work</a>.<br />
<br />
The set uses a reverse applique method, which is something I've never done before and, if I'm honest, the thought of any applique <u>at all</u> makes me nervous. The tea cozy was too perfect not to attempt, though, and the instructions were so fabulous that it not only came out perfectly, but was completely stress free! I made mine out of some very fine black corduroy, and I put an extra layer of batting in to help keep my morning tea hot. I also added about an inch of width so it would accommodate my pot.<br />
<br />

I still need to finish up the matching placemats and then the review of the book will be posted here and on the VMQG blog.<br />
<br />
The VMQG also had a chance to participate in the <a href="http://themodernquiltguild.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/the-basics-challenge-with-riley-blake-designs/" target="_blank">Riley Blake Basics fabric challenge</a>. Each member of our guild received a fat-eighth of 6 lovely Riley Blake fabrics, with the instructions to make a quilted item. Usually I'm pretty good about working on challenges far in advance of the completion deadline, but this one... I started 2 days before it was due.<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl2pq4plCGUwzApcR5pX9ZtGPPw_HWJapRRLAlq9FcFOJoPhFFNFwQH9Ttl9ukZjqNWqW-n4C2WWSqv0terhdi08qfsmTaRT2hBW_6UN7nXdmzCDHKM1x2KVSVDpIzHaktkYjS8ehhxUA/s640/blogger-image-338588871.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl2pq4plCGUwzApcR5pX9ZtGPPw_HWJapRRLAlq9FcFOJoPhFFNFwQH9Ttl9ukZjqNWqW-n4C2WWSqv0terhdi08qfsmTaRT2hBW_6UN7nXdmzCDHKM1x2KVSVDpIzHaktkYjS8ehhxUA/s200/blogger-image-338588871.jpg" width="150" /></a>I'd been wanting to try a wonky log-cabin technique using a shape other than a square or rectangle, and this seemed like a perfect group of fabrics to use for that. I added in some matching solids I had in my stash and quickly stitched up a 22" block. </div>
<br />
You can never have too many cushions on your couch, so after the block was done, I made a quilt sandwich and then pondered how to quilt it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjKqw24jeSdP4mrWCeo8ky189kNmige_SMoaHqn8A6r05-6ttTLyRGDYWJefxiBSPAsVDzrxa8v76pET3TphZXNFHdNLjUKmL5gjGXgEPiQbg2Yg2sVXY3i3oBCYz5hqWmVVJJSGtwZuw/s640/blogger-image-829351095.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: start;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjKqw24jeSdP4mrWCeo8ky189kNmige_SMoaHqn8A6r05-6ttTLyRGDYWJefxiBSPAsVDzrxa8v76pET3TphZXNFHdNLjUKmL5gjGXgEPiQbg2Yg2sVXY3i3oBCYz5hqWmVVJJSGtwZuw/s200/blogger-image-829351095.jpg" width="150" /></a>"I know," I thought. "Seeing as this is due at the guild meeting the day after tomorrow, I'll quilt this thing in the most time-consuming method possible! A complicated pattern of nesting lines 1/4" apart!" Great idea, brain. Once I'd visualized this quilting idea, there was no way for me to quilt it any other way. A couple late nights followed.<br />
<br />

Quick wrap up on 2 more finishes. My very sweet Aunt and Uncle did something amazing for me this past month that really helped out in a tight situation. As did my mom, and she's already been thanked profusely and there may be a surprise for her in the future as well. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

I stitched up this cutie-pie "home sweet home" cross stitch for them and mailed it off. My Aunt and Uncle loved it and have it sitting right on their coffee table. </div>

<br />This was made from a Riley Blake layer cake I skived off my mom (she offered!) some left over Kona Snow jelly roll strips and a bit of fabric from my stash. The <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/01/building-blocks-baby-quilt.html" target="_blank">pattern is from the Moda Bake shop</a> and is from Cynthia Lammon of <a href="http://hyacinthquiltdesigns.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Hyacinth Quilt Design</a>.<br /><br />
Lastly, my girl has definitely inherited the crafting gene from me and her grandma. She asked for and got her very own sewing machine this past Christmas (A Janome MyStyle), which she is thrilled with. She had a quilting lesson from grandma a few weeks ago during spring break.<br />
<br />
R has a small bedroom with a tall ceiling, so she has one of those nifty loft beds where you can put a desk underneath. She had a small desk under there that was really only big enough for her laptop. BUT! We were at Ikea this past weekend and they had the shelf and desk attachments for her bed on sale for $20. $<u>20</u>! Done and done. She now has a lovely huge workspace and is thrilled that she has a place where she can leave her sewing machine permanently set up. Just like mom, she says. <3<br />

I have decided that "Basket Case" (the Boo Davis skull quilt) will be done with a <b>PLAID</b> background. I know. Genius. <br />
<br />
I looked at the homespun and the colours all seemed really muted so I wandered over to the plaid shirting and found an amazing selection of really fabulous plaid flannel shirting. My selections are below; I picked lots of brightly coloured plaids because, hey, go big or go home, right?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEish_FJ6ALBTR05qU5lA96wpdb7L13TCRp1OUej4soeob8k_JMEIFKiY7SkSLSqjANSoJ_Dtnw8ccHRedCq9zgyuPTdC26WqabKgCKYnoYKtM5JW1uVbPiTq1gUbo_QYgGHTWUH82C1ztQ/s640/blogger-image--960150893.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEish_FJ6ALBTR05qU5lA96wpdb7L13TCRp1OUej4soeob8k_JMEIFKiY7SkSLSqjANSoJ_Dtnw8ccHRedCq9zgyuPTdC26WqabKgCKYnoYKtM5JW1uVbPiTq1gUbo_QYgGHTWUH82C1ztQ/s320/blogger-image--960150893.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Plaid-y goodness.<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />I also got some grey herringbone that will be the backing and the binding, also slightly flannel-ish. This quilt is going to be so snuggly.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As we're in line to get fabric cut, my mom turns to me and says, "It's going to look like the Bay City Rollers." And then I remembered how much my young teenage self loved that Scottish power-pop band. Look at this album cover! It's a quilt!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's a quilt adorned with cute 70s boys with fashion mullets!</td></tr>

I have a couple other things to get to first before I start Basket Case but I'm really excited to make it.</div>

<br />
And I'm loving it and can't wait for it to be done and on my bed. <br />
<br />
But I keep thinking about "Basket Case" and trying to figure out what colour I'm going to make the background. The hot pink/red on the original in Boo's book is pretty fabulous but I'm SO not a pink person. But then again... maybe I should embrace it?<br />
<br />
I've found some pretty awesome finishes of this quilt on Flickr too.<br />

I know I'm a day late posting my Library Project QAL choices but blahblahsinglemomblahblahworkblahblahchoresblah. Anyhow. The kidlet is at her 3 hour theatre class this morning learning how to become a cast member on Glee 2021 and so I finally have some moments to post my choices for this year long quilt along!<br />
<br />
<b>1. "Fast Forward" by Jaybird Quilts</b><br />
<br />
Embarrassingly, I've had this pattern and special ruler for well over 2 years, as well as fabric to make it with. I purchased the pattern and ruler on a long ago trip to LA and it's been sitting in my to-do pile forever. Sigh. This will absolutely be the first one I make. I've actually started cutting already so I hope to have this one done soon!<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3CBCRGatfMZnG5jDiGGGqLclsncGPrpr4gacw0-ZSD2NEB8HR7L3Emc5nZcFf8qmuYVRzQZ_vvDYzrkvUjknQAcCYquCD3WJvs07vcL4Rja-hY1DDMwQMYN7SMrfpshrrKcEMCv1i67M/s640/blogger-image--53224701.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3CBCRGatfMZnG5jDiGGGqLclsncGPrpr4gacw0-ZSD2NEB8HR7L3Emc5nZcFf8qmuYVRzQZ_vvDYzrkvUjknQAcCYquCD3WJvs07vcL4Rja-hY1DDMwQMYN7SMrfpshrrKcEMCv1i67M/s400/blogger-image--53224701.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
(The orange background in all these photos is my crazy coffee table!)</div>
<br />
<b>2. "So What" from <i>Brave New Quilts</i> by Kathreen Ricketson</b><br />
<br />
This book. This book is full of amazingness. I could honestly make just about anything in here; everything is unique and edgy and wonderful. I was originally thinking about taking on the totally punk looking "Break the Rules" but I'm trying to be realistic about what I can ACTUALLY get done in the next year.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jq0eXuHOT0OUTbQtVcqs0AUpOOrkkSbTWBKMo12bloQULyNV4uejlWc_49x4tn4-jxHLgcKUpvNaY0cF9CPW_THSAr7w_ZWp5BbXpvcCSQjgQwJbNNZ7GDhIT87xxBo-Jled-JGzOdE/s640/blogger-image--2020313075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jq0eXuHOT0OUTbQtVcqs0AUpOOrkkSbTWBKMo12bloQULyNV4uejlWc_49x4tn4-jxHLgcKUpvNaY0cF9CPW_THSAr7w_ZWp5BbXpvcCSQjgQwJbNNZ7GDhIT87xxBo-Jled-JGzOdE/s400/blogger-image--2020313075.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So my choice is going to be the more bite-sized "So What". I think I can even take a few nibbles out of my stash to complete this one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8TLy8FkNBw3mkFbrs3Ui33F88HUszxRBhrRMfUX6AjNSho2APBc1AxMB_C2r6J7ZDUbO6eBCKjo4YOqj5c8owD2TxifNDc-xcCmCunu0axDAGgFvIoKGIp3SLLXrkUhwJ5CDZeBvTpAA/s640/blogger-image--1992557960.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8TLy8FkNBw3mkFbrs3Ui33F88HUszxRBhrRMfUX6AjNSho2APBc1AxMB_C2r6J7ZDUbO6eBCKjo4YOqj5c8owD2TxifNDc-xcCmCunu0axDAGgFvIoKGIp3SLLXrkUhwJ5CDZeBvTpAA/s400/blogger-image--1992557960.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>3. "Across the Quad" by Jennifer Mathis in <i>Modern Quilts from the Blogging Universe</i></b><br />
<br />
My mom (also a quilter) got me this book for Christmas and I love a lot of the quilts in it as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0RZBT9yN3Kij9fdJpFxRs5xKZwxDNzMOMYDG2pAKITXyau0qtZ5cPHNvTG8jDbAlXLBilCkpbGLV8k-3Yz4pe1jNQ9k-A67jWJpNaUtFah1WvgeiIqhcqwIGmVJUG3amwEHSlkzO81Jw/s640/blogger-image-861755432.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0RZBT9yN3Kij9fdJpFxRs5xKZwxDNzMOMYDG2pAKITXyau0qtZ5cPHNvTG8jDbAlXLBilCkpbGLV8k-3Yz4pe1jNQ9k-A67jWJpNaUtFah1WvgeiIqhcqwIGmVJUG3amwEHSlkzO81Jw/s400/blogger-image-861755432.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I've also made an agreement with myself to use up some of the pre-cuts I seem to hoard and never use. So my choice is this charm-square friendly pattern, combined with the 2 charm packs of Oh Deer that I've had laying around for about 8 months. I'm not sure what the background colour is going to be yet. This looks relatively simple so hopefully it will be a fast finish.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNyrvF0D1BRntddEHDnzKP0rxHgWPyYZSprI7J3kQlE8UOuqU1AuFRcTd1SEPElbYmi2T_OrpXy49M7AirXE9i2cgNMgCCfrtDeywM7TyIxzFeiU7N6QVH9IB0x5tTaDydIelYjHdkcpA/s640/blogger-image--1430868287.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNyrvF0D1BRntddEHDnzKP0rxHgWPyYZSprI7J3kQlE8UOuqU1AuFRcTd1SEPElbYmi2T_OrpXy49M7AirXE9i2cgNMgCCfrtDeywM7TyIxzFeiU7N6QVH9IB0x5tTaDydIelYjHdkcpA/s400/blogger-image--1430868287.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>4. "Flying Rainbow" by Amanda Sasikirana in <i>Pillow P</i></b><b><i>op</i></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br />
Also a Christmas present from my mom, this book is FULL of super cute pillows. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsCAYM6KalBR397haqFPGAy8IgbfTMKhmpq-iBRUyCMvj6KuaOdjNKYnpaXXu4-wcVNRcxy2ZdS1Usr-LRb2HWEE8lir56bXzmhAwF825LHczrdpc20OraWIzcC0Fq8TicdiS-E31nuwU/s640/blogger-image--182279982.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsCAYM6KalBR397haqFPGAy8IgbfTMKhmpq-iBRUyCMvj6KuaOdjNKYnpaXXu4-wcVNRcxy2ZdS1Usr-LRb2HWEE8lir56bXzmhAwF825LHczrdpc20OraWIzcC0Fq8TicdiS-E31nuwU/s400/blogger-image--182279982.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'm going to make this fun flying geese pillow, although I don't think I'll be making it with a white background. That's just a baaaaaad idea with an 8 year old in the house.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYKe0eu_hdLMYm66vGgAkKW5-pH30-hXJAQIB2IOaWLsgp1GS-48tyW8nahrJLaBM0RdreXE7NlnCnXHZilNHPDfchBiY0WpXndyDOYcMO5G4HZlL37bPvEnYi5XyX5-SpYjiYz1gKBSU/s640/blogger-image--223256967.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYKe0eu_hdLMYm66vGgAkKW5-pH30-hXJAQIB2IOaWLsgp1GS-48tyW8nahrJLaBM0RdreXE7NlnCnXHZilNHPDfchBiY0WpXndyDOYcMO5G4HZlL37bPvEnYi5XyX5-SpYjiYz1gKBSU/s400/blogger-image--223256967.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>5. "Basket Case" from <i>Date to Be Square</i> by Boo Davis</b><br />
<br />
This is a book I have actually made things from. I've already made Hootenanny (the cover quilt), as well as the Bright Lights, Patchwork City pillow and the I'm A Weiner! baby quilt. I LOVE Boo's designs. I popped down to Seattle about a year ago to see some of her quilts on display -- I met her and she's just a lovely person. At the time she was working on some more of her trademark skull designs as well as a Grim Reaper quilt that I BEGGED her to sell as a PDF pattern from her website. It was the coolest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFC9dAqIRP6ES8R4GhKz6hjmdu_H2KzgLJ1kiPkWfgOIrSNWjDezduaoREO6UHGNHu70yeP-z_7jN4QTa6ZY6EpvD5UINs6AWLYnNHqZ3Zd1Noo6leJquUFxhtKFiB4xFLqZaULasfhRA/s640/blogger-image--581046488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFC9dAqIRP6ES8R4GhKz6hjmdu_H2KzgLJ1kiPkWfgOIrSNWjDezduaoREO6UHGNHu70yeP-z_7jN4QTa6ZY6EpvD5UINs6AWLYnNHqZ3Zd1Noo6leJquUFxhtKFiB4xFLqZaULasfhRA/s400/blogger-image--581046488.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Yep, so skull-y goodness is on the to-do list. My mom will hate this one. :P<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmpSBkdaEQEfjXedd_MVoLVJWT0s15_Gn4lnyZQdm4qsz2QAo1JtVYUnjfMkFGcgvqYi_NMro14MmsJ2k0qRrbn4wVGTuVFw_Jp4OCGLbIcDgymfWte0QhRrndMd318dXejnQcLZzHF0o/s640/blogger-image-2143518071.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmpSBkdaEQEfjXedd_MVoLVJWT0s15_Gn4lnyZQdm4qsz2QAo1JtVYUnjfMkFGcgvqYi_NMro14MmsJ2k0qRrbn4wVGTuVFw_Jp4OCGLbIcDgymfWte0QhRrndMd318dXejnQcLZzHF0o/s400/blogger-image-2143518071.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Wish me luck! This is a LOT of quilts for me to get done in 12 months!</div>

Me me me!<br />
<br />
My amazing mom gave me these two fabulous looking books.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfgjid56iTxmnhy8E2Py7wrLVO1ft7TThTabVJSObVidRsmXAFGx3G8xJsF4nP05h8U9-kuMpdPJXuNYc7i8aDMJafPt6IUuDJmkTXE4Pz80g7PpT6fTsDmv7pBuzw-6zR1RTGE51lNv8/s1600/pillowpop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfgjid56iTxmnhy8E2Py7wrLVO1ft7TThTabVJSObVidRsmXAFGx3G8xJsF4nP05h8U9-kuMpdPJXuNYc7i8aDMJafPt6IUuDJmkTXE4Pz80g7PpT6fTsDmv7pBuzw-6zR1RTGE51lNv8/s320/pillowpop.jpg" width="247" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Both of them are filled with totally amazing projects from people in the Modern Quilt blogging world, like <a href="http://thehappyzombie.com/blog/">HappyZombie</a>, <a href="http://www.quiltdad.com/">QuiltDad</a>, <a href="http://www.freshlypieced.com/">FreshlyPieced</a>, <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/">CluckCluckSew</a>, <a href="http://spottedstone.blogspot.ca/">SpottedStones</a>, <a href="http://www.bettycrockerass.com/">BettyCrockerAss</a>, <a href="http://oneshabbychick.typepad.com/">OneShabbyChick</a> and sooooo many more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also bought myself a book before Christmas....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQ-mibyo9wylK7hWbHTaF5_2Kv731Ycpm4LsaPQeLWXmbJzP0hMBeHCO4a0_BAczydUnjo3vqTa5KvLk7EjbISSEp30GsDq0pT_eqbKDv7aDahTx_HGdN90gr1h7SP1NrWl07CA0lWok/s1600/brave-new-quilts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQ-mibyo9wylK7hWbHTaF5_2Kv731Ycpm4LsaPQeLWXmbJzP0hMBeHCO4a0_BAczydUnjo3vqTa5KvLk7EjbISSEp30GsDq0pT_eqbKDv7aDahTx_HGdN90gr1h7SP1NrWl07CA0lWok/s320/brave-new-quilts.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm completely in LOVE with the quilts in this book. IN LOVE. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I'm also guilty of buying quilt books and then almost never making anything out of them. So I've decided to take the plunge and join the <a href="http://chezzetcookmodernquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/12/how-about-quilt-along-come-join-library.html">Library Project Quilt Along started by Adrienne over at Chezzetcook Modern Quilts</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisRoyyQINv6rK7avU-tc4H6NSY8vIyCUffcrhYq0HCz5_Tbq2YCfm3I1gQx5BnBuhbGRb3jIvQxRwwSWgcMDiIKYtD5YeTTh9H8AsSFN9VENXzPBQG3VchvxGizDYMW-SHfFUMRwcInh0/s1600/libraryprojectqalbutton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisRoyyQINv6rK7avU-tc4H6NSY8vIyCUffcrhYq0HCz5_Tbq2YCfm3I1gQx5BnBuhbGRb3jIvQxRwwSWgcMDiIKYtD5YeTTh9H8AsSFN9VENXzPBQG3VchvxGizDYMW-SHfFUMRwcInh0/s1600/libraryprojectqalbutton.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The challenge is to go through your library of quilt books, pick at least 4 projects, and make them over the next year. There will be a monthly linky party on the 3rd Friday of every month on Adrienne's blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not a very prolific quilter -- 4 projects is going to be a challenge for me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Will you join me?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Where have you been all my life? It's my new obsession. It completely feeds into my A-type personality and mathy-brain needs. I've done so much stitching over the past year and I still have a number of projects either partially finished or planned for the future.<br />
<br />
After seeing Holly show off a finished cross stitch at a VMQG meeting, I rushed out and bought a pattern from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/weelittlestitches">weelittlestitches</a> -- The Big Bang Theory cast. I stitched up Penny first and it was the most gratifying thing. All the counting! Precision! Nerdy-ness! <br />

The BBT one was given to a friend. Next I did Buffy. Because I love Buffy. And I wanted to make one for me. Look at that wee little Spike! And Xander's eye-patch! Even Buffy has Mr. Pointy in her hand. I'm still pondering taking this out of the frame and captioning it "She saved the world. A lot."<br />

One of my other favourite TV fandoms is Firefly. As in "I can quote the dialog" kind of fandom. This particular pattern I found for free online from a <a href="http://cthulhucrochet.blogspot.ca/2010/02/firefly-character-cross-stitch.html">fellow Vancouverite Browncoat</a> who blogs under the name cthulhucrochet. It was a lot more challenging than the weelittlestitches patterns because it involved half-stitches as well as a ton of outline backstitch. I adore how it turned out, especially the "Big Damn Heroes" text at the bottom. <div>

For Riley's birthday last year, I combined 3 different weelittlestitches patterns to make this huge one of Harry Potter and Friends. From left to right we have: Mad Eye Moody, Tonks, Lupin, Sirius, Hagrid, Hermione, Harry, Ron, Dumbledore, Ginny, Fred, George, Luna and Neville. <br />

<div>
The other great thing about cross-stitch? Compared to quilting, it's an EXTREMELY affordable hobby. The embroidery floss and Aida cloth are both really affordable. That and the speed at which I can make things results in this being a perfect craft for gift making!</div>

<br />
One thing that happened this year that I'm really excited about is some new work I've taken on. For the past 6 months, I've been sewing samples, writing and editing patterns, and even doing a little design work for <a href="http://lilyashbury.com/">Lily Ashbury</a>! Lily Ashbury is the name of a Moda fabric line designed by the amazing <a href="http://lilyashbury.com/about/">Stephanie Carter</a>, who works right here in Vancouver. You can read the <a href="http://lilyashbury.com/blog/">Lily Ashbury blog</a> and find yourself some cool tutorials and projects. <br />
<br />
I'm beyond thrilled to be her helper, and one of the perks of this job is getting to see the new fabric lines waaaaaaay before they hit the stores. The most recent collection, called <a href="http://lilyashbury.com/tag/high-street/">High Street</a>, was released in May of this year. The next one is called Folk Lore and I completely adore it; it's partially inspired by Mexican folk art prints. I cannot wait to get started on projects.<br />
<br />
With the High Street line, Stephanie asked me to write/edit the patterns and sew up samples for a sweet ruffle-pocket apron, a travel sewing kit, and an appliqué quilt. <br />

Stephanie and I also worked on some block designs for submission to a 100 quilt blocks magazine. I don't think we've heard yet which block(s?) have been selected for publication but the three below are what we came up with.<br />
<br />
The first two blocks are pieced, and the third is appliqué. I must admit, I haven't done a ton of appliqué in the past but I think I'm managing it well. The pieced blocks have an interesting secondary pattern when put together into a quilt top. <br />

Coming soon will be a pattern for the <b>Bon Voyage Cosmetics Tote</b>. I pretty much designed this from the ground up -- with a number of samples made and a lot of feedback and tweaking from Stephanie, of course. The pattern has been submitted to Moda and I believe the final pattern sample will be made of the yet-unreleased Folk Lore line. The image below shows the final prototype; it includes a pouch pocket on the exterior, a zip pocket on one side of the inside, and a set of 5 expandable pockets on the other side of the inside. These expandable pockets are perfectly sized to hold your travel-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, cream, etc. There is plenty of additional interior space to hold other necessary toiletries or even a small zippy pouch full of makeup.<br />

Some very significant life changes have been happening and I'm totally sticking with that as my excuse for not blogging. Yep. So I'm just going to post a few things that I've made in... say... the past 3 months.<br />
<br />
First, a new advent calendar. I'm tired of either (a) spending a ton of money on a cool Lego or Playmobil one or (b) getting some crappy thing filled with crappy chocolate. <br />
<br />
This advent calendar, which I didn't finish until December 6th (good thing Riley was away with her dad in Hawaii until the 9th!) is from Pretty in Patchwork Holidays, a super cute book curated by <a href="http://www.quiltdad.com/2011/11/pretty-in-patchwork-holidays.html">QuiltDad</a>. I still need to find some nice, flat candies to put in the pockets but at least it's done. That hexi Christmas tree is also the first, and likely the last, hand-done english paper piecing I've done. I'm happy with how it turned out but good grief, so fussy to do!<br />
<br />
The original pattern calls for using permanent ink and stamping the numbers onto the advent pockets, but I've been doing a lot of cross stitch over the past year and I thought I'd try using waste canvas to stitch the numbers on. It worked but waste canvas is a total pain to remove, I've discovered. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The <a href="http://www.vmqg.ca/">VMQG</a> and the <a href="http://londonmqg.wordpress.com/">LMQG</a> also did a needlebook swap this past month. This is what I sent across the pond. I'm excited to receive a needlebook in exchange at our December VMQG meeting!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtA-8H4dPRhxaugTv3uZFgFrvQW25iYVyU9qzoKxeJonpg4G7K9CHqh8ze44P_DVrl5xTzRn56wvVbXdcy51Eb_aHtvsuaIxA_82MvCoOQpmsQIhV_UYnt4fsY6hEudv_PmvhN2Z-qkBY/s640/blogger-image--1792654386.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtA-8H4dPRhxaugTv3uZFgFrvQW25iYVyU9qzoKxeJonpg4G7K9CHqh8ze44P_DVrl5xTzRn56wvVbXdcy51Eb_aHtvsuaIxA_82MvCoOQpmsQIhV_UYnt4fsY6hEudv_PmvhN2Z-qkBY/s400/blogger-image--1792654386.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
At the end of October, the VMQG also ran a <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2011/03/241-tote-pattern.html">241 Tote Bag</a> workshop, taught by our own <a href="http://poppyprintcreates.blogspot.ca/">Krista Hennebury</a>. It was a totally fun day. The black and white dotty print is some sort of mystery poly fabric from the clearance section, which I paired with some turquoise quilting cotton and black twill. I love this bag and I really want to try the Noodlehead SuperTote now.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuc4gXwYWm25rszz2Hw15Cxg4qqVjGjRQMZf64tZg7uSK6MTs9YPxGekYsYC2Ft-f-HAJF-_7rbn4HwmvjkG9Aai-SMrMUT1augRtMRVf7VfKAdtULdDiI6sL8pgL_Fhomua6s2fF-M9w/s640/blogger-image-2143943149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuc4gXwYWm25rszz2Hw15Cxg4qqVjGjRQMZf64tZg7uSK6MTs9YPxGekYsYC2Ft-f-HAJF-_7rbn4HwmvjkG9Aai-SMrMUT1augRtMRVf7VfKAdtULdDiI6sL8pgL_Fhomua6s2fF-M9w/s400/blogger-image-2143943149.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Riley's bedroom has the apartment's breaker box in it. Apparently, according to new building code, the box cannot be inside a closet (I guess for access-related reasons?). Anyhow, she was pretty bummed about it and, truth be told, it's gunmetal grey and pretty ugly. <br />
<br />
The VMQG had a Michael Miller Cotton Couture challenge a few months back where we were given bundles of bright, citrus-y solids. I added in the turquoise and the navy blue from my stash and made this wall hanging to be exactly the right size to cover up the horrible breaker box. She was beyond thrilled with it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsKFBeLkAHH7kZeLRdL0kRQ7c5FK1OlMSg0Rpe-CBgXiWHMu2DD-bDytF7fnvF33alTlHpz68bzzwAcbf5pt-H4F0grOIhCAZHAVL1K9Jgyz-JGpxBLPTwRHLdDF9-yUEGNZ8Oa60_Ek/s640/blogger-image--595712637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsKFBeLkAHH7kZeLRdL0kRQ7c5FK1OlMSg0Rpe-CBgXiWHMu2DD-bDytF7fnvF33alTlHpz68bzzwAcbf5pt-H4F0grOIhCAZHAVL1K9Jgyz-JGpxBLPTwRHLdDF9-yUEGNZ8Oa60_Ek/s400/blogger-image--595712637.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ah, cross-stitch. My new crafting love. I blame <a href="http://hollysredbike.blogspot.ca/">Holly</a>. Way back over a year ago, I think, she showed off a cross stitch she'd done from Canadian designer <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/weelittlestitches">wee little stitches </a>at a VMQG guild meeting. I want to say it was a Star Wars one but I can't remember clearly (see her finished <a href="http://hollysredbike.blogspot.ca/2012/08/completed-buffy-vampire-slayer-cross.html">Buffy the Vampire Slayer</a> one). I do remember thinking, "That is the coolest thing ever and I want to make one." And then there was a pattern sale at the wee little stitches store and I was off to the races. I've made a bunch of these and most have been given as gifts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This one, though, is just for me. Sherlock. Possibly the best thing to ever grace Netflix. I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes nerd in general and I think the new series is absolutely BRILLIANT. This one is now framed and hanging in the living room.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFyBtVXX_wv2xhO5e0xV8I_e51UoFS95R1KzbXSXdBI5ekGbAzn2ztCMkDY_vf7lA0cPs1GB-h_CdoaSdOTepgIyYRBgjR1nBFtBPkQVIvC5eIuNGez1g-D_sGbPGGpoFgZvqGHaa6sgc/s640/blogger-image--1992628741.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFyBtVXX_wv2xhO5e0xV8I_e51UoFS95R1KzbXSXdBI5ekGbAzn2ztCMkDY_vf7lA0cPs1GB-h_CdoaSdOTepgIyYRBgjR1nBFtBPkQVIvC5eIuNGez1g-D_sGbPGGpoFgZvqGHaa6sgc/s400/blogger-image--1992628741.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The one below is from a different pattern designer called PixelPower. I made this for a friend who recently started working as a high-school english teacher, and it's the Stark children from Game of Thrones and their respective dire wolves. You can buy this pattern on their <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/embroidery/hand-embroidery/game-of-thrones---starks---cross-stitch/43191">Craftsy store</a>. Like wee little stitches, they have <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/1198199/pattern-store">lots and lots</a> of amazing pop culture and nerdy designs. Jon and Ghost are my favourite :) I stitched it on light blue Aida because I thought it would make the dire wolves pop out more than on white or natural.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I think that's enough for today.... man, I really hope I can do a better job of keeping up with this thing.</div>

<br />
It's actually been so long that I had to figure out how to add my gmail account as an owner to the blog... so much blog-guilt.<br />
<br />
And there's this new-fangled thing called Bloglovin! Yep:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/1968440/?claim=s3m9pfvvz3z">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a><br />

Riley has been invited to a birthday party for her friend Anna, and invitation requested no toys for gifts (apparently their house is chock full). Instead, they requested only very small items or a charitable donation.<br />
<br />
I decided to make this small apron for Anna out of some scraps I had left from a quilt. It's from an <a href="http://www.skiptomylou.org/2009/08/05/childs-apron-tutorial/">excellent tutorial on Skip To My Lou</a>.<br />

<br />
I'm happy with how this turned out.... thinking about scaling it up for an adult size, maybe making a bib for the top to make it a full apron instead of a half one.<br />
<br />
I also noticed that the apron challenge at the Creative Stitches Show in March is for a reversible apron.... the wheels are turning.<br />

Now, I'm not usually a fan of scrappy quilts, but I did a sort of scrappy baby quilt for my friends Chris and Allison for their son Flynn. It was from Boo Davis' book "Dare To Be Square Quilting" and her patterns seem to lend themselves really well to scrap quilting.<br /><br />Riley recently moved from a single bed to a queen bed, and so she'll be needing a new light summer quilt for her bed. I adore the owl quilt in Boo's book, so I pulled out a bunch of pink, green and turquoise scraps and started cutting. <br /><br />I'm pretty happy with this layout and it didn't even make the tiniest dent in my scrap pile. <br /><br />The fun thing for her is that a good portion of these scraps are left over from sewing clothes for her, so she'll be able to look at it and go, "That piece is from the dress Mom made me to wear to a wedding, and that piece is from my favourite summer dress when I was 3, and that piece is from stuff that was in my room when I was a baby."</p>Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12729266401089154858noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130038657939124984.post-42186613773811776552012-01-09T15:47:00.001-08:002012-01-09T16:11:15.497-08:00Hexagon quilt turned hexagon placemats.<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gosh, I have <i>such</i> a love-hate relationship with this fabric. The VMQG was given free fabric from Freespirit, the new Jay McCarroll fabrics, and we had a guild challenge to complete projects with it. Now individual fabrics I love... like the large flowers with the polka-dot overlay? LOVE. Ditto for the 8-bit looking pixel-y teal one and the acid-sploosh plum one. But some of the others? The orange with random stripes and the orangey balls on green background? Not so much.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The even more puzzling thing is that these fabrics were all from the same line and were intended to go together in a quilt. I can totally see some of them as garment fabric, which I guess maybe shouldn't be surprising as Mr. McCarroll was the first season Project Runway winner.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In any case, I was really excited to get my fabric and doubly excited to try out my as-yet untested hexagon quilting ruler. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then this happened.....</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/heatherendearing/6427055165/" title="Hexagon quilt with Jay McCarroll fabric"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="Hexagon quilt with Jay McCarroll fabric by HeatherEndearing" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6427055165_12fc2625df.jpg" /></span></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/heatherendearing/6427055165/">Hexagon quilt with Jay McCarroll fabric</a>, a photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/heatherendearing/">HeatherEndearing</a> on Flickr.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yikes. I knew after piecing it and seeing it up on my design wall, that there was NO POINT in finishing it into a lap quilt.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So.... I hacked it up into 6 equal rectangles and made placemats! My thinking being that maybe smaller doses of the fabric would make seem less scattered. Plus, my 6 year old is a very messy eater and if any bunch of fabric would be able to hide stains, this would be it. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Admittedly, I finished 2 and then the project languished for a few weeks over Christmas. But today I've finished up all 6 and now present you with photos of them deployed on my kitchen table.... and somehow, THEY DON'T LOOK TERRIBLE. They actually go with the turquoise seats on my chairs and the vintage 60s rosewood table.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

</div>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/heatherendearing/sets/72157628800967707/">Jay McCarroll placemats</a>, a set on Flickr.</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Colour me pleased! And having 6 of these, we now have enough to accommodate 2 extra guests, and I can also rotate them through my daughter's place at the table when her mat gets messy and the rest are still ok. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm not sure how this went from ugly potential quilt to funky/retro placemats, but I'm all for salvaging projects that are potentially wadders.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Happy New Year! We had a fairly relaxing Christmas around my house; lots of family time and treats, which made things very enjoyable.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, the start of another year...twenty-twelve seems so much easier to day than two-thousand-and-eleven, right? I'm hoping that by itemizing my intentions for the next little while, I will be motivated to actually complete some of these projects.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First, two quilt patterns that were purchased last year and really should get made this year:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/6631398703/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="IMG_0304"><img alt="IMG_0304 by HeatherEndearing" height="320" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7010/6631398703_302d7b5a8a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
</span></div>
</div>
</div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This pattern was purchased at last year's Vancouver Sewing Show at Tradex. I love Orange Peel or Cathedral Windows quilts but the curved piecing kinda freaks me out. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This one is done via appliqué, which is probably even more work but somehow seems less scary than curved piecing. I even have the fabric I think I want to do this one in, and I love the brown background to offset the coloured "peel pieces".</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><a href="http://www.thequiltpatch.ca/shop/Kits/Kits-from-Urban-Country-Quilts/p/Market-Fresh.htm">Here's a link to the pattern</a> in case anyone is interested in purchasing it. </span>
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next up is a pattern that I purchased, along with the required ruler, at </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://shop.sewmodernonline.com/">Sew Modern</a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> on a recent trip to Los Angeles:</span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">

<div style="text-align: left;">

</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="line-height: 1.6em;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: normal;">This, I think, will be made for Riley in a queen size, to go along with her new queen-size bed. Probably the background will not be black.... as it won't really work in her white/pink/lime bedroom. I'm thinking likely white background fabric and brightly coloured fabrics will work just as nicely. The timeline on this one will be to get it done before warm weather returns to Vancouver.... so, let's say May at the latest.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: normal;"><br /></span></div>

Some interesting ideas right on the label there.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next...garment sewing. I have so many cute patterns for Riley. They all seem summery so I hope this summer arrives early and stays late so she can get some wear out of these items. This one, from ModKid, is called Nina and makes both an adorable and comfy elastic waist skirt plus 2 different peasant tops. Last summer, Riley lived in tops the style of the one on the right so I'm hoping this pattern is a winner.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Also from ModKid, I have this pattern for Sophie pants. I love these, especially the three different hem finishes. They look so comfy. I sometimes wish kids patterns would scale up to adult size.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">More is planned.... the 2nd batch will be posted shortly. I'm also planning a clean and re-organize of my sewing room in the next short while. If I'm feeling brave, I will post the unsightly "before" photos of my small sewing cubby. *shudder*</span><br />

I realized this weekend that this coming week is Riley's last week of school before the holiday break. She has 2 teachers for grade 1 -- Madame Erin, who teaches her Monday through Thursday and Monsieur Burrus, who teaches her on Friday. Now Mr. "B" (as the kids call him) is hipster/music/science/cool guy, so he's going to get an iTunes gift card. Mme Erin, however, strikes me more as a Commercial Drive/hippie/organic food/composter type, so I figured she might actually appreciate something home made.<br />
<br />
I had lots of Insulbright left over from the VMQG/FVMQG Potholder Pass, so I sorted through my scraps this morning, found a bunch of red, green and white, and whipped up a couple scrap-busting potholders.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/6501620971/" title="Christmas Potholders"><img alt="Christmas Potholders by HeatherEndearing" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7032/6501620971_227417d8e6.jpg" /></a><br />
<span style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/6501620971/">Christmas Potholders</a>, a photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/">HeatherEndearing</a> on Flickr.</span><br />
<span style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I used this quick and easy <a href="http://www.mygirlthursday.com/2011/05/diy-scrap-busting-pot-holders.html">Tutorial from My Girl Thursday</a>. These were SO FAST to make, mostly because they're not bound like a traditional quilt. I did bind <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/6426767447/in/photostream">the ones I made for the potholder pass</a>, but these still look really cute and took about 1/8th the amount of time. I still have a ton of Insulbright left, so perhaps a few more of these will be made for miscellaneous Christmas gifts.</span><br />
<span style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br /></span><br />
Now watch this cute video of She and Him singing "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and you'll be in the holiday spirit!<br />

Since I last put any effort into maintaining this blog, we have adopted a lovely beagle-basset cross named Waylen. He was part of Riley's 6th birthday present last May, but I have to say that he's become my dog, following me everywhere. He's 5 years old and a very gentle doggie; the entire family loves him and enjoys his company. Plus he's cute as anything.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(OMG. So cute, right? Totally deserving of a stocking.)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />With Christmas fast approaching, I took 30 minutes yesterday and quickly sewed him up his very own stocking to leave for Santa. Hopefully Mr. Claus will leave him some squeaky tennis balls (his favourite) and maybe some peanut butter dog treats.<br /><br />xo<br />HeatherHeatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12729266401089154858noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130038657939124984.post-22945935075756384092011-12-04T08:41:00.001-08:002011-12-04T09:00:02.078-08:00An early New Year's resolutionSo. I've totally ignored this blog for the past 18 months. Bad me. Life has been busy, Riley is in Grade 1 now and I'm on the executive for the <a href="http://www.vmqg.ca/">Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild</a>. I've decided to make sure I spend a little time each week here writing and posting some of my projects. I get so much enjoyment out of reading other people's blogs... not necessarily saying that mine will be super thrilling but even if a few friends/guildies read it once in a while, then I'll be happy.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've resurrected my long-dormant <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/">Flickr</a> account, which I'm hoping will make things easier in terms of uploading photos. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yesterday's project? Well, Riley had a one-day stomach bug which normally would have put the kibosh on my entire day, but SHE TOOK A NAP. Miracle! I ran down to my sewing room and whipped up this quick laptop sleeve for my new laptop.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0; overflow: hidden; padding: 0; width: 500px;">

<div style="float: left; height: 75px; padding: 0 0 10px 0; width: 75px;">

<br clear="all" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 0px;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/18219215@N07/sets/72157628265663207/">Laptop Sleeve</a>, a set on Flickr.</div>
<br />
I followed<a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2009/05/elizabeths-fabric-focus-5/"> a tutorial </a>done by Elizabeth Hartman for SewMamaSew! and it worked out perfectly, although I did add in an extra layer of cotton quilt batting for additional protection.<br />
<br />
xoxo and extra promises of regular updatyness,<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Well, one turned into two, and so on, and I finished up 4 wonky blocks last night. </span><br />

I've been saving them up for the past 2-3 years, not really knowing why but now I'm so pleased that I did. I love these scrappy things! I'm trying to use a bit of black in each one to maybe provide a small amount of cohesion between them.</span></div>Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12729266401089154858noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130038657939124984.post-59151766852936907662010-07-21T13:45:00.000-07:002010-07-21T13:45:28.389-07:00I feel so guilty.<div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Oh dear, I can't believe it has been over one month since my last post. We were away for 10 days and then all manner of life things intervened (read: rampant illness and summer activities). I don't know if anyone is actually reading this thing (aside from my mom - hi, Mom!) anyhow so perhaps it's a non-issue.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Since we returned from Toronto a few weeks back, I have actually done a fair bit of sewing.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">First, I thought I had better get started on a quilt project for my Niece. I am planning on giving her a twin-sized quilt and pillow sham for Christmas this year. She will be almost 2 and close to moving into a "big girl" bed. Since </span><a href="http://blipsdripsstrips.blogspot.com/2010/06/zipper-quilt-done.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">my last quilt</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> took me eleventy-million years to complete (ok, well a year), I figured I better get going or it wouldn't be done in time.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Well, I started cutting and sewing, and by some magic process, the </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">whole entire quilt top</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> was cut and sewn in a matter of about 5 evenings!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6BU8napHc9rjwXZZuQSVNj7I5QH5nDYE6r6BIF2nAibIh2Cg0iZsLVvlfWf-gF0kysxgJHka37dVE4JrmIb-IL086WZSJToV7Oh2D5zW1VoqBXEh8Ar8jvL6xSZVdF7rEZrsLo1lpO38/s1600/spicecake1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl6BU8napHc9rjwXZZuQSVNj7I5QH5nDYE6r6BIF2nAibIh2Cg0iZsLVvlfWf-gF0kysxgJHka37dVE4JrmIb-IL086WZSJToV7Oh2D5zW1VoqBXEh8Ar8jvL6xSZVdF7rEZrsLo1lpO38/s320/spicecake1.jpg" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I'm totally amazed. And happy. And now wondering how I'm going to quilt it. Isn't it a cute pattern? The snowball blocks in the centre are 10", which probably explains how fast it went together. It will be perfect for my Niece; her parents' house is very old - apparently Sir John A. Macdonald used to live there! It is a nice mix of traditional and modern.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">A close up of the cute fabric. The fabric line is called "Flutter". The pattern I used is called "Spice Cake". </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Riley continues to be a dress-only girl this summer and so I have sewn yet </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">another</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> one of those dresses that she loves. This time, we used a meter of this amazingly cute Michael Miller fabric with adorable Hedgehogs on it. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I attended my first </span><a href="http://vancouvermodernquiltguild.ning.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> meeting last week. So many nice people with fantastic quilts. I am so excited to be a member!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">One of the members, Paul, issued a Challenge Block. We picked up a small square of fabric that had an image of a sock monkey on it, plus a 1" wide strip of white. We were challenged to make a "freeform" quilt block - the only restrictions being that the white strip had to go around the monkey and that it had to finish to 12.5".</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I was totally terrified to make a block with no instructions, being a total newbie at quilting, but once I looked up a few tutorials (thanks, </span><a href="http://www.quiltdad.com/2009/09/quilt-along-5-wonky-squares-in-squares.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Quilt Dad</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">), I just dove right in. It was completely liberating! To make a block without worrying about having the pieces exactly the same size! To not stress about sewing </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">exactly</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> 1/4"! To just grab scraps from the left-overs of other projects without too much thought!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I can see this being something I do on a regular basis. I have a mountain of quilting cotton scraps left over from sewing quilts AND clothing. Scrap-busting, here I come! (Turned out really cute, right?)</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Oh, and remember </span><a href="http://blipsdripsstrips.blogspot.com/2010/05/hi-and-my-next-sewing-project-and-also.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">that blouse I was going to sew way back at the beginning of this blog</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">? I did actually make one up but despite my paranoid over-measuring and fitting, it ended up about 1" too small at the waistband. So I gotta either drop 10 lbs (which I could totally stand to do) or make another (which I will probably also do). </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">xo</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Heather</span></div>Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12729266401089154858noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130038657939124984.post-16954942321370285672010-06-14T14:37:00.000-07:002010-06-14T14:37:31.891-07:00Last minute, pre-vacation sewing panic!<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Lately, R has been incredibly picky about clothing. Specifically, it seems like she has to have the minimum amount of material actually </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">touching</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> her body. This usually results in huge getting-dressed battles every morning.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">We are about to leave on vacation to visit relatives in Central Ontario, which is very hot and humid at this time of the year. I have absolutely no desire to duke it out with her every morning about clothes, so I decided to whip her up a dress or two from a pattern that is basically a sack with shoulder straps.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I've sewn this pattern for her twice before and it used to be a winner, except for some reason the elastic around the arm was now bothering her (although it is not too tight, but what can you do). So I swapped out the sleeve for a ruffle and now it's her favourite thing.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I started cutting out dress #2 from this pattern, and then realized I had heaps of this particular fabric grabbed from my stash, and how CUTE it would be for R and her baby cousin E to have </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">matching</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> summer dresses. Of course, I decided this yesterday; we are leaving early Wed morning and I haven't even started packing yet. Panic!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So I dig through my stash of patterns and come across a baby sun dress pattern from 1991. I think this must have been inherited from my mom as I don't recall it at all. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRnhPdrPHj87otuRFZmyT79od0A0qriZSbsUGk_tBuQfwWx2EEt1xdoDIXjD1X0J57Wj42dB1B530tHUMTMqMZC3h1nTAoXdAiQ6CTQiDmuGVybpeTtppwHxeTO7yXpQ2SJk-iaAZ4Ddbr/s1600/simplicity7310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRnhPdrPHj87otuRFZmyT79od0A0qriZSbsUGk_tBuQfwWx2EEt1xdoDIXjD1X0J57Wj42dB1B530tHUMTMqMZC3h1nTAoXdAiQ6CTQiDmuGVybpeTtppwHxeTO7yXpQ2SJk-iaAZ4Ddbr/s320/simplicity7310.jpg" /></span></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Ok, so not the most modern thing every but the sun dress is pretty cute and it was literally the only pattern I had that would work for a 1 year old. Plus, a ruffly sun dress on a cute baby in the summer? ADORABLE!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The end result: 2 sun dresses that aren't really matchy-matchy but will hopefully result in some cute photos of R and E together. The fabric isn't wouldn't be my first choice, but R chose it out of my stash and all little girls love pink butterflies and flowers.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I also finished up my first ever vintage sewing project for myself - Butterick 3375 circa about 1964, judging from the hair and the price on the pattern. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I'd like to point out that I really wish I had a dress form, as this looks much better on me then hanging all droopy on a hanger. But I just don't have time to model this right now! This was a trial run with some left-over fabric I had in my stash - a black and white graphic print. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The pattern turned out very similar looking</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOTYrf8ddpxGNOUpuoynqIv_qJGC604Y2iT7x3jQyYMND0fhAOQKovarYqHBYD4PvR9NYgdYhHiENcha-U8LSpMqFshCiSgplg1uW8U3Wmkz1jpliORHynEutITkwRjYXUBtJkFTiXmSkz/s1600/patternenvelopefront.jpg"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> to the pattern envelope</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">, although I eliminated the elastic band at the bottom hem as I figured I have enough fluff there without it. One other thing that is interesting is that the armholes seem to be much smaller than modern patterns. It fits, but it is definitely a different fit than a modern sleeveless blouse. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I will definitely wear this top this summer and it will probably make it into my suitcase tonight. I don't know if I would make it again but it was definitely a nice, simple way to get over my phobia about cutting into my vintage patterns.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Bye folks! I haven't had time to update the blog - lots of happenings including R finding out that she needs glasses. She is not a very happy 5 year old little girl at the moment. I think she looks adorable in them, but there's no convincing her.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">About a year ago I started sewing a quilt from a book called "The Modern Quilt Workshop". The pattern is called the Zipper Quilt and it has about 3000 pieces. I'm not sure what I was thinking as I had only done 2 very simple quilts prior to taking on this project. One year later, I had finally finished piecing the top.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">My Mom very graciously agreed to quilt the top of this queen size quilt for me on her Juki that is mounted into a quilting frame. It's done and it looks amazing! Here is is on our bed:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaqA7yGH_UgoM0RHrZgmVuv9aDT_me0mu6fJDTkCJCozSOENR8JR5S3zPtuStynW4Z5KJAJhj9obk_OdWRpT-O3olwAvb9sCDLpBdwbYHdlj6If9xXmesCT0Uv4rsMg0M-VBvE5nlH0BES/s1600/zipperquiltdone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaqA7yGH_UgoM0RHrZgmVuv9aDT_me0mu6fJDTkCJCozSOENR8JR5S3zPtuStynW4Z5KJAJhj9obk_OdWRpT-O3olwAvb9sCDLpBdwbYHdlj6If9xXmesCT0Uv4rsMg0M-VBvE5nlH0BES/s320/zipperquiltdone.jpg" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">And a close up of the cool meander pattern Mom did on it. It's quilted with a medium brown thread, which I think looks wonderful.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I also have to throw a big thank you out to my Mom for doing the binding as well. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I have also sewn a dress for R, a bathing suit for R and have tackled my first vintage pattern in the past few days:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I'll try to get photos of everything up in the next few days.
